Application of Acupuncture and Moxibustion therapy in different diseases
Acupuncture and Moxibustion is a medical treatment that has been practiced for thousands of years in China and other Asian countries as well as now around the world. It is used as a means of treating and preventing disease.
Acupuncture treatment involves the insertion of fine, sterile needles into specific sites (acupuncture points) along the body’s meridians to clear energy blockages and encourage the normal flow of energy (Qi) through the individual.
The general theory of acupuncture is based on the premise that there are patterns of energy flow (Qi) through the body that are essential for health. Disruptions of this flow are believed to be responsible for disease. Acupuncture corrects imbalances of flow at identifiable points close to the skin.Today, acupuncture is an effective, natural and increasingly popular form of health care that is used by people whole over the world .
Acupuncture needles are so fine that there is no discomfort when they are inserted but a slight tingle (known as needle sensation) may be experienced. The needles are usually left in for approximately twenty minutes to more; during this time there may be a heaviness of the limbs and a feeling of relaxation. The Doctor / practitioner may also stimulate the acupuncture points using other methods, such as moxibustion (a traditional technique that involves the burning of mugwort, a small, spongy herb used to facilitate healing), cupping and electro-stimulation etc. in order to re-establish the flow of qi.
Since Acupuncture and moxibustion Medicine promotes the body’s natural healing ability, many conditions can be treated. It is also a comprehensive system of preventative health care and maintenance. The effectiveness of acupuncture is well-documented. Throughout its long history, acupuncture has established a solid reputation as an excellent alternative for health care that actually works, and is very effective to treat some diseases, where other methods of treatment could not achieve good result or failed.
An Acupuncture medicine doctor should possess adequate knowledge and experience for providing proper treatment to his/her patients. To avoid the unwanted complications in Acupuncture treatment please avoid taking treatment by quack / fake Acupuncturist. There are many around us without proper qualifications. Because inadequate knowledge and experience may lead to serious medical problems.
The World Health Organization recognizes Acupuncture as a viable means of treatment for a wide range of conditions. In an official report, Acupuncture: Review and Analysis of Reports on Controlled Clinical Trials, the WHO has listed the following symptoms, diseases and conditions that have been shown through controlled trials to be treated effectively by acupuncture:
low back pain, neck pain, sciatica, tennis elbow, knee pain, periarthritis of the shoulder, sprains, facial pain (including craniomandibular disorders), headache, dental pain, tempromandibular (TMJ) dysfunction, rheumatoid arthritis, induction of labor, correction of malposition of fetus (breech presentation), morning sickness, nausea and vomiting, postoperative pain, stroke, essential hypertension, primary hypotension, renal colic, leucopenia, adverse reactions to radiation or chemotherapy, allergic rhinitis, including hay fever, biliary colic, depression (including depressive neurosis and depression following stroke), acute bacillary dysentery, primary dysmenorrhea, acute epigastralgia, peptic ulcer, acute and chronic gastritis.
In the field of acupuncture some good clinical researches have been completed, and there has also been some follow-up assessment of many of the conditions that have been treated by Acupuncture Doctors. Some diseases are more successfully treated by acupuncture and Moxibustion where other methods of treatment could not achieve good result or failed. Though this method of treatment has already been started in our country but due to quite less number of medically qualified acupuncture doctors available in our country and lack of proper perception about the application of this method in some specific diseases, the patients are depriving from the advantages of Acupuncture & Moxibustion treatment.
So, I have made an attempt to provide little information about the effects of Acupuncture and Moxibustion in few diseases. Many of the facts and figures quoted in the following sections are the results of my own experience and clinical trials carried out in China and others countries.
Diseases of the Muscles, Bones and Joints:
The muscles, bones and joints are usually called collectively the musculo-skeletal system. When disease or damage occurs to this system it nearly always results in pain, and most people use words such as rheumatism or arthritis to describe this type of pain.
There are three main types of damage that occur to the musculo-skeletal system; the first is a sudden injury or sprain which might be a domestic injury, or might be incurred during a sporting activity or in a car accident. This usually causes local pain and bruising lasting for a few days, or even a few weeks or more. The other main group is arthritis and this can be divided into two important types, Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Sprains: Sudden injury or sprains usually respond well to acupuncture. The pain resulting from a sprained shoulder, ankle etc will often continue for some days or weeks after the initial injury. Once a clear diagnosis has been made acupuncture can usually be used to relieve this type of pain. Many of these ‘acute pains’ represent a self-limiting disease process; for instance a small burn is usually excruciatingly painful for a few days and then settles. If acupuncture is used as a form of pain relief for burns then its ‘pain relieving’ effect is only required for a few days. Because of the natural history of the pain it is therefore difficult to produce a clear picture of the effect of acupuncture on this type of ‘short-lived pain’.
The experience of a many of Acupuncture doctors including me, shows that, of the people treated for differing acutely painful conditions, about 70 percent obtain swift and significant pain relief. If a fracture of the bone is present then the pain relief gained from acupuncture is less effective than if the injury is due to a strain or tear of the muscles, tendons or ligaments. The main advantage of treating these acute pains with acupuncture is that chronic pain can be avoided. A sudden shoulder injury may produce pain and immobility for many months, sometimes years, but if acupuncture is used when the pain occurs then it seems that chronic pain may be avoided.
Osteoarthritis: Osteoarthritis and the rheumatic pains that result from this type of joint damage are quite a common problem. People frequently complain that their arthritic knee pain is worse in cold or damp weather and this demonstrates quite clearly the origin of the concept of pathogens in traditional medicine. The pathogen in osteoarthritis is almost always cold or damp and therefore these pains should be treated by moxibustion.
A great deal of research work has been done to investigate the effects of acupuncture on the pain caused by osteoarthritis. Clinical trials have been completed on knee, hip, elbow, neck and lower back pain, and the information from these trials shows that significant pain relief can be achieved in about 70 per cent of those who receive acupuncture. Some work suggests that only 50 per cent of people benefit from acupuncture while other trials show 95 per cent of the patients benefiting. Acupuncture also has a ‘magical quality’ that drugs do not have, so it is difficult to sort out the effects of the ‘magic’ as compared to the real effects of acupuncture. In spite of these problems, acupuncture is a safe and effective form of treatment for osteoarthritis.
Rheumatoid Arthritis: The effects of acupuncture on rheumatoid arthritis are not so clear cut. During the early, acute, inflammatory stage of rheumatoid arthritis there is some evidence to suggest that Acupuncture might worsen the pain (though which usually may subside gradually) and therefore many acupuncturists do not treat acute rheumatoid arthritis. After some months the acute inflammatory stage subsides and the residual joint destruction may then lead to the development of a secondary osteoarthritis. This type of pain is amenable to acupuncture and responds in the same way as other osteoarthritic aches and pains. Chronic pain, due to disease of the musculo-skeletal system, is frequently amenable to acupuncture treatment. The published research shows that pain which has been present for many years can respond as well as pain that has been present for only a few months; therefore, from the available information, it is fair to say that acupuncture is ‘always worth a try’ in this type of condition.
Headaches: Headaches can be due to a multitude of factors; arthritis of the neck, dental problems, psychological problems, sinusitis, stress and tension, and head injury are a few of the many causes. Headaches are a common complaint and a notoriously difficult one to treat effectively, and they can be the cause of a considerable amount of distress and marital disharmony. Acupuncture treatment has been used to treat a wide variety of headaches, particularly migrainous headaches, and the results obtained have been very encouraging. The published work suggests that between 65-95 per cent of all headache sufferers obtain significant and long lasting pain relief from acupuncture treatment. Migraines seem to respond as well as, if not better than, other
Day 100- Crohns Diet Symptoms Disease Treatment Colitis IBS
SUMMARY
Crohn’s Disease and Colitis are not terminal diseases. Yet both conditions have side effects that can be fatal if left unattended for a long time. Learn more about the side effects of Crohn’s Disease and Colitis.
Crohn’s Disease and Colitis – The Side Effects
Although there is no cure yet discovered for Crohn’s Disease and Colitis, the symptoms can be managed and even eliminated in many instances. Knowledge is power and sufferers of both conditions need to understand the diseases. The conditions come with varied side effects. Awareness gives sufferers a better understanding of the diseases and a greater chance to meet and overcome challenges.
One of the more serious side effects of Crohn’s Disease and Colitis is the inability to absorb nutrients. This situation can occur from inflammation after surgery or with chronic diarrhea. Often sufferers have to make dietary changes because they are intolerant of certain foods. Yet there may still be problems with absorption of the nutrients from the revised diet. Indeed, sometimes absorption of nutrients is affected negatively by the antibiotics used to treat infections.
Malabsorption can lead to a vitamin K deficiency. Crohn’s Disease and Colitis sufferers should take a high potency multivitamin (in addition to usual treatments for the conditions) to counteract any malabsorption. Doctors should test patients for vitamin and mineral deficiencies including folic acid, zinc, iron, B12, and vitamin D. If your doctor neglects this step, a gentle reminder is in order.
It is crucial to test these levels in Crohn’s Disease and Colitis sufferers. If the proper level of vitamins is not present, the person is not getting adequate nutrition. This discovery would require an adjustment to the person’s regular diet.
Besides being uncomfortable, the side effects from Crohn’s Disease and Colitis can be dangerous if left untreated over time. Of course, sometimes even drugs can cause various side effects. The most important point is to address the side effects and seek help for them.
Do not ignore symptoms or changes in conditions. Crohn’s Disease and Colitis are not terminal diseases. People with both conditions live an average life span. To ensure that every day is as comfortable as possible, individuals should do everything in their power to manage their symptoms.
Seeking information from their doctor and other trusted sources gives them that knowledge and power over their own conditions. Researchers are always exploring this area and sufferers should keep up with the latest discoveries. Vitamin A is thought to have a positive effect for patients but more research is necessary about the benefits.
Many researchers are convinced that the Western diet is a factor in the onset of both conditions. Some doctors and researchers believe that a Crohn’s Disease/Colitis water fast followed by a daily raw food diet is helpful to sufferers. Of course, individuals should not embrace water fasts or drastic changes in diet without consulting their doctor. The good news for sufferers is that Crohn’s Disease and Colitis are manageable conditions.

What You Should Know Regarding Heart Diseases
In 2007, heart disease was declared to be the number one killer of Americans. It will strike at any time and there are 2 reasons why these diseases run prevalent in this region. Hereditary factors do play a significant role, but lifestyle features a heap to do with people contracting and dying from this disease as well. the additional you know concerning your family’s heart health history and also the contributing factors of what causes the illness, the higher you’ll control and limit your chances of obtaining one or more of the foremost common heart diseases.
The term heart disease covers many different conditions of the heart. When the muscles of the center don’t seem to be working as they must be, it’s thought-about to be a disease of the heart. When the blood vessels around the center are affected, it is referred to as coronary artery disease.
Being said that, this text can discuss diseases of the center, not illness caused by the vessels round the heart. Coronary artery disease is a serious medical condition that could be deadly and if you think either heart or coronary disease is gift, you should request medical attention immediately. Your doctor can run tests and examine your heart in order to determine the severity of the condition.
The guts could be a muscle; so, it will be littered with several different conditions. Cardiomyopathy is a term that means heart muscle disease and it is a terribly serious medical condition. It refers back to the deterioration of the heart muscle and it will be the main explanation for sudden cardiac death and can put the individual that has this condition at risk for arrhythmia. Arrhythmia could be a condition when the center does not beat because it should. This can cause angina and heart attacks.
Though coronary artery disease mainly affects the vessels around the guts, it can cause the muscle to deteriorate as a result of the lack of blood that carry oxygen to the heart. This in flip causes the center muscle to become weak and cause problems to the patient.
Another terribly dangerous scenario that has to do with the center is congenital heart disease. This is often caused by no fault of the patient because they’re sometimes born with the condition. It’s caused by genetics of the fogeys or the atmosphere that the mother is exposed to throughout pregnancy. Although most of the congenital heart diseases are detected before birth, however in some cases, an individual will go their whole life without even knowing that they have this medical condition.
Heart disease is not prejudice. It can happen to anyone, regardless of age, race and money stature. Since this disease could be a combination of environmental factors, lifestyle choices and heredity, being responsive to what causes the disease is one manner to know if you are at risk.
This article is not meant to present medical recommendation; it is simply a general discussion regarding heart disease and conditions. To search out additional concerning diseases that affect the center, talk to your doctor or do a little a lot of research on line.
Emphysema, COPD & Other Conditions Beaten: 10 Advantages of Alternative Medicine & Natural Remedies
10 ADVANTAGES OF ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE AND NATURAL REMEDIES (One man beat emphysema and COPD in six weeks … over 20 years ago.)
Fact: Emphysema, COPD, cancer, arthritis, and other diseases and adverse health conditions have in many cases been beaten. But why aren’t these countless successes acknowledged by mainstream medicine?
PREFACE
Alternative medicine is kind of an umbrella title for a number of different health or healing philosophies and approaches to medicine, health and healing. Included in alternative medicine are homeopathy, naturopathy, chiropractic care, acupuncture, and natural remedies.
Many diseases and health conditions (i.e., emphysema, COPD, cancer, arthritis) have actually been beaten by alternative medicine and natural remedies. However, mainstream medicine has for years tended to not acknowledge these countless successes, apparently because they go against its established philosophies, methodologies, and are generally far less profitable than their mainstream treatments.
From my research and experience, and that of many highly qualified sources, many safe and effective alternative treatments and remedies have been ignored or even scoffed at for years by mainstream medical authorities and professionals. Mainstream medicine has labeled some alternative treatments as “unsafe,” “unproven”, etc. However, consider how many once “approved” mainstream pharmaceutical drugs, prescribed to millions of patients, have been recalled due to harm or death to patients? Consider the numerous potential side effects they list in their ads for their drugs still on the market. (Talk about “unsafe”! Yet, they can label alternative medicine and natural remedies “unsafe”?!)
Alternative medical, health and healing “testimonials” have also often been called “anecdotes” or “anecdotal evidence;” sometimes, as in a court room, such can be called “hearsay.” Some anecdotal evidence does not qualify as scientific evidence because its nature prevents it from being investigated using the scientific method. I’m not discounting the scientific method at all; it certainly has its place, and it is one of the single greatest strategies and reasons for humanity’s greatest advances in science, technology and medicine in the last two centuries.
There is truly “hearsay” and there is “anecdotal evidence.” Applying these labels too broadly, however, can shade or hide the reality of truly valuable and valid research and results. This terminology or labeling can be accurate (i.e., illogical conclusions), desirable and necessary in many situations. “Goat yogurt mixed with bananas and peanuts prolongs life. I heard of a man who ate this almost every day of his life, and he lived to be 112.” This would be a simplistic example of hearsay or anecdotal evidence; the conclusion is unreliable and does not follow the evidence. Such cases may hold some truth, but, by their nature, using the scientific method is not possible.
However, with many successful alternative treatments and natural remedies, I am asserting that there is often a much higher level of correlation linking them to health or healing, even though the scientific method may not be applicable. (Mainstream medical authorities have in the past tended to discount claims or research that wasn’t conducted with the scientific methodology). (Many celebrities, professional athletes, politicians, and other wealthy people are seekers and strong supporters of alternative medicine, natural remedies, etc. Such high performance people need, want and demand high performance supplements, practices and treatments for their minds and bodies. Why shouldn’t you and your family have the same? )
Objectivity is foundational to the value and integrity of the scientific method; however, in the area of medicine and healing, the subjective, human realities of the patient (i.e., belief, expectation, attitude, commitment, family or environmental support, etc.) have abundantly been demonstrated to play major roles in healing. But such real factors and dimensions cannot easily be incorporated by the scientific method; therefore, other methods of measurement, research and investigation are necessary.
Again, the scientific method is highly necessary and deserves glorious credit. But scientists, researchers, doctors, etc., need to have the wisdom to know when it is needed or applicable; they, and we, need to have the wisdom and integrity to not discount or discredit evidence simply because it has not or cannot be investigated by the scientific method.
With the human, subjective variables being very real, medicine, health and healing can be somewhat more complicated than, say, the aerodynamics of flight, or other areas of technology. It seems that to simply label evidence that doesn’t fit the strict western scientific methodology, simply because scientists can’t fully explain or predict a claim, or that its nature prevents such strategy, would be closed minded. Some factors, variables or dimensions of the human experience are simply broader than the scientific methodology allows.
As can be seen as you investigate alternative medicine—great results have been realized from alternative medicine, natural remedies, etc.; such results are undeniable.
Mainstream medicine places a high value upon being able to explain “why” a tested treatment works; if they can’t explain it or it isn’t predictable by their standards, they tend to discount or discredit the substance, treatment or practice. Yes, it is worthy to want to know why something works or doesn’t work. However, wisdom from positive results would seem to say, “Use it … as you continue to investigate the “why” of it.” (Again, consider the countless dangers and deaths that have resulted from mainstream “approved” drugs, treatments and practices … many of which the public seems to be little aware.)
The bottom line is—the alternative treatments and natural remedies I support and use have demonstrated a much higher degree of value and validity than simple “hearsay” or “anecdotal evidence.” A real “truth seeker” will not let fear, bias, ego or an agenda interfere with gaining truth and facts.
In recent years millions of common people have been awakened to the value and validity of alternative medicine and natural remedies; now, even mainstream practitioners are opening their minds to them. Here are a few examples. For years, chiropractic care was basically scoffed at; but now chiropractic care is so widely embraced that many insurance companies cover it and countless people have benefited from it. For years, alternative doctors and health practitioners asserted that good nutrition and cleansing the body of toxins were crucial to good health and healing; yet mainstream medicine tended to downplay their importance. Now, after years of alternative medicine making progress, an increasing number of mainstream practitioners are open to these truths and even practice them personally themselves. This is good news! These mainstream medical professionals are to be appreciated for being forward-thinking!
A third example is that, for years, alternative professionals asserted that anti-biotics were way over prescribed by mainstream doctors. Now, in recent years, mainstream sources have come to acknowledge this, as some harmful microbes have become immune to the over prescribed anti-biotics. This has even been report on in mainstream media. Once again, alternative medicine revealed and proclaimed truth that is now being received. I am not attempting to discount or diminish the value and validity of mainstream medicine. It definitely has its place. And I definitely acknowledge and appreciate the truly dedicated mainstream medical professionals who both practice and advance beneficial methods of medical innovations. In my opinion, there is no better place to go for injuries or trauma than a mainstream medical hospital!
I’m just saying that, when it comes to general health and healing of diseases and conditions like emphysema, cancer, COPD, arthritis, etc., both mainstream and alternative treatments should be openly and fairly considered. This seems to be “common sense” wisdom. When you begin to look into the successes of alternative medicine, it will soon become apparent that the countless successes and testimonials cannot be denied. Five, ten or twenty success testimonials from a single source could be overlooked. However, a broader view will reveal that there are countless successes, from many diverse and highly credible sources of alternative medicine and natural remedies. Many such successes are from late stage patients who mainstream medicine had exhausted their limited treatments on, and sent them home to prepare to die. Yet, alternative medicine is credited with a good percentage of restoring the health of such late-stage patients, or at least extending their lives and allowing them to experience a higher quality of life in their final days (as compared to what they likely would have had under mainstream treatment or hospitalization).
At some point in one’s investigation of the subject, it becomes apparent that to discount or deny these many diverse successes would be ignorant and closed minded. One man, Jim, was told by his mainstream doctor that there was nothing else he could do for him, and that he would die in about six months from his emphysema and COPD.
Shortly after, however, Jim discovered and began a long established, but still relatively little-known, alternative treatment. Just six weeks after starting this simple and inexpensive treatment, Jim returned to his mainstream doctor. After some tests, his doctor
Find Out If You Have Gilbert’s Disease
Gilbert’s disease is a condition that has closely related symptoms as jaundice, in fact there had been several studies that say that some cases of jaundice is caused by Gilbert’s disease. A very thin line separates the two conditions and without professional help one may not be able to understand and determine which condition they are afflicted with.
It’s difficult to understand why it is important to know the right condition you have if two conditions barely have a difference. The importance of knowing the right conditions that you are afflicted with is that knowing what condition you have can lead to easier treatment. Treating certain conditions requires knowing exactly the type of condition that you are experiencing. You can’t really treat a flu with cough medicine right? It goes the same with every kind of condition that people experience.
Unfortunately though some conditions may not have a treatment or a cure. One of those conditions is Gilbert’s disease. This condition is not really damaging or harmful to the patient but it still causes a lot of discomfort. Gilbert’s disease causes fatigue and jaundice to a person.
Even if some conditions have no known cure or treatments it is still important to have it diagnosed properly to learn more about the condition and find a cure in the future. Going back to Gilbert’s disease if it has no known cure or treatment why do people still to have it diagnosed. For experts to be able to find more about the condition and to be able to find out more about how to treat it.
How do you find out if you are suffering from Gilbert’s disease? Is there a proven way to pinpoint the condition if Gilbert’s disease shares the same symptoms with jaundice? There is and you can consider following it if you have the time to examine yourself. Here is a short list of the ways and the steps to go through to systematically to find out if you have Gilbert’s disease.
Step number 1: If you have an inkling that you have Gilbert’s disease and you also found out that your family has a history of having it too, you should immediately look for the signs and symptoms of the diseases. One of the symptoms you have to look for is the symptom of jaundice. Those signs are yellowish skin and yellowish eyeballs, it may also be accompanied by swollen mucus membranes and running nose. Another symptom is fatigue due to physical stress (exercise, general stress, and illness). Other symptoms to look for include nausea, general sleepiness or tiredness, pain in the body.
Step number 2: Visit your family doctor and tell him about the symptoms and the signs that you are experiencing. You should also tell your doctor about your suspicion and your family history. This may narrow down the search for the condition you are experiencing. Telling your doctor your suspicions may help out a lot.
Step number 3: Besides testing the physical symptoms, your doctor will let you go through an indirect bilirubin blood test that will say whether the disease is at hand.
Step number 4: Once diagnosed, though there isn’t a treatment for the condition your doctor can still treat the jaundice and the help relieve the pain or discomfort associated with the abdominal symptoms of Gilbert’s disease that can be present.
Dupuytren’s Disease Singapore
What is Dupuytren’s Disease?
Dupuytren’s (du-pwe-TRANZ) Contracture (sometimes also called Dupuytren’s Disease, palmar fibromatosis or morbus Dupuytren) causes fixed flexion contractures of the hand, where fingers may fully flex into the palm, but cannot be fully extended (straightened).
The condition is named after Baron Guillaume Dupuytren, the surgeon who first described the surgical correction of this condition.
The condition is caused by an abnormal thickening of the connective tissue just beneath the skin known as fascia (or palmar aponeurosis). This thickening occurs in the palm and can extend into the fingers. Firm cords and lumps may develop that can cause the fingers to bend into the palm.
The skin may become involved in the process but the deeper structures (such as the tendons) are not directly involved. Occasionally, the disease will cause thickening on top of the finger knuckles (knuckle pads), or nodules or cords within the soles of the feet (plantar fibromatosis).
What causes Dupuytren’s Disease?
While the exact cause of Dupuytren’s Disease remains unknown, it is thought to be associated with certain biochemical factors within the involved fascia. It has very specific associations, which include:
Scandinavian or Northern European ancestry (it has been called the “Viking disease), but also seen in some Mediterranean countries (e.g. Spain and Bosnia) and in Japan.
Men rather than women (men are ten times as likely to develop the condition)
Age over 40 years
Family history (60 to 70% of those afflicted have a genetic predisposition to Dupuytren’s Contracture)
Liver cirrhosis
Although unproven, Dupuytren’s Contracture has also been suggested to be associated with trauma, diabetes, alcoholism, tobacco use, liver disease and phenytoin treatments for epilepsy. While there is no conclusive evidence that hand injuries or specific occupational activities have a higher risk of developing Dupuytren’s disease, it has been suggested that the condition may be caused, or triggered by physical trauma such as manual labor or over-exertion with the hands. It is however interesting to note, that the condition does not always occur in the dominant hand, and has no correlation with right- or left-handedness.
What are the symptoms and signs of Dupuytren’s Disease?
In Dupuytren’s Disease, the tough connective tissue within one’s hand becomes abnormally thick, which can cause the fingers to curl and can result in impaired function of the fingers. The little and ring fingers are most commonly involved. In many cases, both hands are affected, although the extent of involvement may be different.
Symptoms of Dupuytren’s Disease include the development of bands, cords, lumps and pits within the palm. Progression is unpredictable. Some individuals will have only small lumps or cords while others will develop severely bent fingers. Those with more severe disease may begin to experience symptoms at an earlier age.
The condition usually has a gradual onset and often beginning as a tender lump in the palm. This discomfort usually resolves, and Dupuytren’s Disease is not typically painful. Over time, tough bands of tissue may develop, which are visible on the surface of the palm and may appear similar to a small callus. The lumps or nodules are become firm and adherent to the skin.
As the fascial bands thicken, they form cords which extending from the palm into one or more fingers, and as these cause tethering and bending or contractures of the fingers. These are the source of the reduced mobility commonly associated with the condition. These cords may be sometimes be mistaken for tendons, but actually lie between the skin and the tendons. The disease may first be noticed because of difficulty placing the hand flat on an even surface, such as a tabletop.
Contractures generally progress slowly, especially in women. However, in severe disease, the condition progresses more rapidly, affects both hands and may have associated foot involvement. As the contractures worsen, individuals begin to experience increasing difficulty with daily activities such as shaking hands, washing up, wearing gloves and putting their hands into pockets.
What are the treatment options for Dupuytren’s Disease?
The goal of treatment is to improve finger position (allowing complete opening and closing), thereby also improving hand function.
In mild cases where the disease is progressing slowly, causes no pain, and everyday hand function is not affected, only observation and regular assessment is required. On the other hand, for more severe cases, various treatment options are available to straighten the affected fingers, by removing or breaking apart the cords that are pulling your fingers in toward your palm.
At your initial consultation, we will discuss the most appropriate treatments for your condition based upon the stage and pattern of the disease and which joints are involved. Before commencement of treatment, it is important to establish realistic goals, and discuss possible risks and results.
It is important to note that there is no permanent way to stop or cure the condition. Despite treatment, the disease process may recur. What is important is to optimize hand function for any given stage of the disease.
There are several different ways to release the contractures and straighten the fingers. These treatment options may include conservative measures (splinting), minimally invasive needling techniques (called percutaneous needle fasciotomy or needle aponeurotomy) or open surgery (fasciectomy).
Surgery
Surgery may be required in some cases and the need for surgery is often based on the degree of metacarpophalangeal joint (knuckle) contracture, functional difficulty and the rate of disease progression.
The objective of surgery is to remove the tissue in your palm affected by the disease. This may be challenging because it’s difficult to identify tissue in very early stages of the disease. Diseased tissue may also attach to the skin, making it difficult to remove and increasing the chances of recurrence.
The main advantage to surgery is that it results in a more complete joint release than that provided by the needle or enzyme methods. Physical therapy is usually needed after surgery, and the recovery time can be longer. Occasionally, skin grafts may be required to cover the wounds after extensive removal of affected tissue.
Needling (Needle aponeurotomy or percutaneous needle fasciotomy)
This technique uses a needle, inserted through your skin, to puncture and “break” the cord of tissue that’s contracting a finger. Contractures often recur but the procedure can be repeated. Some doctors now use ultrasound to guide the needle. This might reduce the chance of accidental injury to nerves or tendons.
The main advantages of the needling technique are that there is no incision, it can be done on several fingers at the same time, and usually very little physical therapy is needed afterward. The main disadvantage is that it cannot be used in some locations in the finger, because it could damage a nerve.
Collagenase Injections, Radiation Therapy and Other Alternative Therapies.
The US FDA has recently approved injections of an enzyme, collagenase clostridium histolyticum (Xiaflex) for the treatment of Dupuytren’s Contracture. The enzyme is injected to soften and weaken the taut cord in the palm. The physician then performs manipulation to break the cord and straighten your fingers the following day. Enzyme injections may be painful, and require multiple treatments spaced a month apart for each individual joint.
These treatments, as well as radiation and other therapies are not standard treatments and are currently under investigation.
Lifestyle Measures and Home Therapy
For patients with mild Dupuytren’s Contractures, these maneuvers and pointers may help maintain hand function and improve comfort:
Finger Stretches: Gently bend your fingers backward from your palm. One way to do this is to place your fingers on the edge of a table, palm down, and then lift the palm upward gradually as you keep your fingers flat on the table.
Massage and heat: Warm up your hands with a microwavable heat pack before massaging your palms with moisturizing lanolin cream.
Protecting your hands: Use gloves with heavy padding during heavy grasping tasks; and avoid tightly gripping tools by building up the handles with pipe insulation or cushion tape.
Alzheimer’S Disease Facts
Alzheimer’s disease is an irrevocable, incurable and progressive brain disease. This disease slowly destroys memory and thinking ability, and ultimately reduces even the ability to carry out the simplest tasks. Alzheimer’s disease disturbs and interferes with a person’s daily life and activities. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia. Alzheimer’s disease most frequently affects older people and is also seen in middle or younger aged people. Memory problems seem to be the first symptom of Alzheimer’s disease. And as the disease progresses, memory loss continues and changes in normal behavior appear during the initial stage of Alzheimer’s disease. Forgetting the route and getting lost, trouble in handling money and paying bills, repeating questions even after knowing the answers , taking longer time to complete even the normal daily tasks, personality changes, poor judgment ability, repeatedly changing mood, etc., are some of the noted behavior changes in people suffering from patients suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. People often are first diagnosed in this stage. During the moderate stage of Alzheimer’s disease, memory loss and confusion increase, and the patients may find problem in recognizing family and friends. They will find difficulties in coping with new situations and learning new things. They will be unable to do even the familiar tasks such as dressing themselves. During the final stage of Alzheimer’s disease, people cannot even speak and are completely dependent on others for their care. During the end period of the final stage, the patient’s body shuts down and the patient may have to be in bed all the time. The common symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease are memory loss, inability to think and understand, personality changes, and inability to function. But the symptoms, type, severity, sequence and progression of the mental changes due to Alzheimer’s disease vary from person to person. In the past, Alzheimer’s disease can be certainly diagnosed only after death by examination of brain tissue. The early symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, which include forgetfulness and loss of concentration, are most frequently neglected as normal signs of aging. But, now-a-days, doctors can guess whether a person having memory problems has Alzheimer’s disease based on some diagnosis and tests. The doctors diagnose Alzheimer’s disease based on the person’s overall health, past medical problems, ability to carry out daily activities, and behavior and personality changes. The doctors also conduct memory tests, problem solving tests, etc. They may do blood test, urine test, and spinal fluid test, and take computerized tomography (CT) scan or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of the person’s brain. The medications such as Donepezil, rivastigmine, galantamine and Memantine are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat Alzheimer’s disease. These medicines help to maintain thinking, memory, and speaking skills, and control certain behavioral problems. But these drugs do not help in controlling the progress of the disease and are useful only for a few months to a few years. Early diagnosis of the disease also allows the affected person to make important financial and legal decisions. Painful Conditions & Diseases of the Knee
There are several knee diseases or conditions that can also contribute to chronic knee discomfort. These diseases often affect the soft tissues, joints, nerves and/or bones within the knee area. The most common knee diseases and conditions include arthritis, arthritis-related cysts, infections, calcification and softening of vital cartilage. An overview of each of these ailments can be found below.
Knee Arthritis
There are several types of arthritis, including genetic, degenerative and inflammatory. Genetic arthritis includes both rheumatoid arthritis and gout. An individual with these conditions is genetically predisposed to have chronic inflammation of the joint, which can be painful as well as limit movement. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and is degenerative in nature. The cartilage gets worn down over time due to repeat usage of the knee joint. Knee arthritis can be treated with an arthritis knee brace or, in very severe cases, knee replacement surgery. In some arthritis cases, the knee’s swelling can lead to fluid building up in a cyst typically located in the back of the knee. These are often referred to ask Baker cysts. If the cyst becomes large and painful, you can have a physician drain the fluid, as well as use physical therapy and medication.
Infection on the Knee Joint or Bone
Following a puncture wound, a bacterial pathogen can penetrate the knee area through the joint, bursa, bone or skin and lead to an internal infection in the knee joint or bone. While the knee may not experience explicit pain as the result of an infection, the individual may develop a fever, experience chills in their body and a localized heat around the knee. Once diagnosed, these infections are typically treated with a round of antibiotics.
Tumors
Knee tumors are rare, but when they do appear they can impede walking and cause pain. The best treatment for tumor is surgical removal, but in a few extreme cases, it may also require lower leg amputation.
Calcification
The collateral ligament located on the inside of the knee can calcify. This is usually seen in people who have had a significant MCL ligament injury in their past and is known as Pellegrini-Stieda syndrome. The calcification leads to inflammation, but it can be treated effectively with continuous cold therapy, immobilization and rest. In some instances a cortisone shot can help.
Chondromalacia
Chrondromalacia is a condition characterized by the softening of cartilage under the patella (knee cap). It is most often seen in women, likely due to how their hips distribute weight to their knees. When the cartilage softens, it can cause significant deep knee pain as well as stiffness. Most cases of Chrondromalacia are effectively treated with anti-inflammatory medication, strengthening exercises for the quads, rest and cold therapy.
